Ceilings

I have a strange infatuation with painting the ceilings in my house. I just think it’s a shame that we often forget that surface in a room …and if I were rich, oh boy, would I have fun finishing my ceilings. For now, paint will have to do!

An auction find.

Wednesday I went to my very first auction, I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without attending such an exciting event! I went along with my friend Erin from Ephemera with curious desire for what the newspaper ad said of 1,700 pieces of vintage costume jewelry. We had no idea what we were getting into! Amazed and shocked by the amount of money people were spending on items, we lost all hope for finding an inexpensive treasure. Our patience persevered and in the end we came out spending much less then anyone else and found some real treasures… one of them being this HUGE map of the USA.

What an event it was trying to get it home in my car! Hardly fitting in the back we had to drive with the hatch up and our seats far to close to the dashboard for comfort. Now that I have it in my house I am trying to decide where it needs to be hung.

{my living room, a thrift store treasure trove of mid-century modern furniture as well as a fine showroom for all things UrbanPosture}

I’m debating on putting it against this large and empty wall that takes you down into my basement/our studio.  I’ve always felt this wall was fine blank but now that I have this rather large map it’s starting to speak to me. What do you think, does this wall need my new map hanging on it?

A TV Pilot by Spruce Home

This is AMAZING… what if there was an UrbanPosture tv pilot?  I don’t know if Sarah and I could be interesting enough to create an entire show but we could give it a try. Hope you enjoy as well as get some inspiration of your own.  It makes me want to go back to doing upholstery… I learned a little bit of the trade back in the days of college and recovered a chair while working for a drapery sewing room.

perfectly kept…

in this case it’s not my house.  On any given day you may stop by and find the kitchen in total chaos. I’m always making some type of mess as well as something delicious.  This week I will share with you the dining area in my cozy as well as flour covered kitchen.

A better view of the scones on the kitchen table as well as my adorable flowers made from clothing patterns. Hanging on the wall are two collages I’ve made as well as porcelain fruit passed down from my Grandma that I just can’t part with.

I hope  you enjoyed the little tour of my dinning area, stop bye for some scones any time.

welcome home.

My darling husband and I purchased our first house almost two years ago.  It’s a 1940’s, New England Colonial-style house that came with creaky stairs, chipped paint and scratched hardwood floors – all of which we absolutely love!  We have my been working diligently on making it our home and remodeled the kitchen last summer.  In doing so, we exposed this awesome brick chimney. You might recognize it from some of our merchandise photos. Over the last year I collected some goodies that coordinate perfectly with the red brick.  …and this is what welcomes you into our home!

getting to know urbanposture

For the next few weeks we want to help you get to know us, the girls behind UrbanPosture.  The best way to do this is to invite you into our homes and share our surroundings with you.  We’ll be taking turns sharing photos of our homes, families and maybe a few great fall recipes and other hobbies.

Enjoy!

Our style

Today we offer you another peek into our lives… more like a peek into the furniture we’ve collected.  We find it very hard to pass up a piece of furniture with great style or character. We’ve found many great pieces in thrift stores and alongside driveways abandoned by their previous owners.  I will have to admit that I’ve had to purge  items that have sat in my garage for over three years without ever making it into my house. But… I feel as long as I’ve tried to prolong their lives for just a bit more, my job has sufficed.

There are even times that our furniture is used for great things, last week we had the pleasure of offering up items to be used for the Parlours new music video and  photo shoot.  We are so honored!

It’s amazing to think how well our items coordinate together, we truly do have similar taste in design and style.

My other hobby

Outside of screen printing I really enjoy baking and cooking, you might say I am a foodie. I’ve been in the kitchen since the age of five when my mom would let me mix concoctions of flour and water and let ferment/explode in the kitchen over night. At six I was making Rice Krispie treats almost all by myself,  it just progressed from there. Now days I get to experiment in my own kitchen making huge messes after I just spent the afternoon cleaning. Why do I do that to myself? I really feel that being in the kitchen is another way I can be creative… trying new recipes is always exciting, you never know how something will turn out.

Me at the age of 6… chef extraordinaire!

With the arrival of fall weather I’ve been wanting to try out a new recipe for Apple Cider doughnuts from my favorite food blogger, Smitten Kitchen. Ironically, on one of the of the hottest days this October my family has an evening of doughnut and fritter frying. Oh they were soo yummy!

Doughnuts all cut out and ready to fry

Hot Apple Fritters coming out of the Fry Daddy.

We took the frying outside… who wants the house to smell like the state fair for a week after? The cool night air made the evening really tolerable and the mosquitoes were minimal. My nieces even had a blast playing flashlight tag out in the yard.

There were even some leftovers!

What are some of your hobbies? Share with me your favorite food blogs or recipes, I’m always looking for more inspiration!

We are pleased to announce that UrbanPosture will be participating in ‘Chicago’s 1st Annual Street Festival Celebrating the Home’, aka DESIGN HARVEST.  Renegade Handmade is hosting UrbanPosture along with several of our dearest friends in the DIY Home Decor Pavilion. Unfortunately Leslie and I won’t be there, but if you live in Chicago or surrounding you should mark your calender and make it point to go and check out great art, crafts and  furniture, as well as, music, food and beverages!! They don’t call it festival for nothing!!
